HOW VOLUNTEERING ENRICHES YOUR LIFE & COMMUNITY

Retirement is often described as a time to relax and enjoy life, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to find deeper meaning and connection. Volunteering is one way to achieve this, offering a powerful sense of purpose while making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Whether you dedicate a few hours a week or dive into a larger commitment, the rewards of giving back extend far beyond the act itself.

A number of years ago I was both privileged and humbled to work as a volunteer at our local Hospice inpatient unit. As part of the Reception team, I was responsible for directing phone calls, helping patients and visitors with queries, and preparing new patient documentation.

Being part of the organisation provided me with an opportunity to give back; to offer my skills and experience learned over many years, to assist others. Knowing my time and expertise was contributing to a cause vital in my community was heartwarming. There are many, many ways to be involved in volunteering. Here are some options:

  • Animal Welfare

Organisations like the SPCA or HUHA rely heavily on volunteers and are always looking for assistance in a number of way.

  • Health

The Cancer Society offers training and the option to volunteer in a number of different areas as often or infrequently as you like.

  • Conservation

Volunteer with organisations like the Department of Conservation (DOC).

  • Humanitariun

Offering rewarding internship opportunities around the world is Love Volunteers.

  • Retail

Charity shops are run mostly by volunteers and provide training for retail staff.

  • Disability services

Volunteers play a big part of the IHC organisation with a variety of opportunities.

  • Clinical Centres

Volunteer at Greenlane Clinical Centre, Auckland City Hospital, or Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland.

Other organisations that you can volunteer with include counselling and support services, such as OUTLineNZ and Women's Refuge, public safety services, like Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Community Safety Patrols, and Surf lifesaving. You can also volunteer with religious or youth organisations, such as the Salvation Army, GirlGuiding New Zealand and Scouts. Then there are sports and music clubs, libraries, and annual charity fundraising events.

If you're looking for an opportunity to give back in your community, take a look online, there will be plenty of options.
